Salt is a necessary ingredient for cooking. We are familiar with the ordinary cooking salt but there are really several different kinds of culinary salt. The more common is Kosher and sea salt. There are such things as black salt which is a blend of minerals characterized by a strong sulfur odor. This is commonly used in north India. Then there is fleur de sel, the premier quality salt from France. There is also the Himalayan salt, a pinkish colored salt from Pakistan that is becoming increasingly popular.

The surprising thing is that salt is not just there for its culinary properties. They are also being used for decorative lamps. Salt lamp is carved out of a large block of salt and fitted with an incandescent bulb or candle. Because it is often colored attractively, it provides an attractive glow. It is often used as nightlight or for accent lighting. Makers of this product abound in Pakistan, Poland and Iran where salt is abundant.
