wood turning

Five years ago, I joined my brothers and sisters on a tour to Australia and New Zealand. We traveled for nine hours by plane to Sydney and went around Australia on a tour bus. Our bus tour of Australia lasted for two weeks and after that, we flew to New Zealand and toured by bus again for another week. In addition to the usual tourist spots, kangaroos and koalas, we got to visit the farms. We saw how a sheep was sheered in Canberra and how wood turning was done in New Zealand.

I remember distinctly that they took us to a place a few hours from Auckland to see how wood turning was done. Wood turning was done by hand; it looks sort of like how pottery is done but you use tools instead of your hands. The guide told us that there were two methods of turning wood: spindle turning and faceplate turning. He said that most bowls and platters were done using face plating while most pegs, furniture legs are done using spindle turning. At the end of the live demonstration, we were taken to a small show where we could but wooden pieces done by the workers.
