handmade cuckoo clocks

Contrary to many legends, the cuckoo clock was not originally made by peasants or brilliant folk artists but rather by highly skilled wood and metal workers. In the 18th century making handmade cuckoo clocks was considered a forest-friendly and sustainable industry as compared to glass making and ironworks which needed a lot of firewood during the manufacturing process.

Cuckoo clocks are great decorative items that not only look attractive but are functional as well. Traditional styles are those hand carved cuckoo clocks that feature wooden hands, a dial and a cuckoo bird that announces hour and half hour periods. Some clocks are now available with batteries but there are still clocks that require regular winding.
