Cuckoo clocks

Be reminded of the time by having a clock that sounds off every hour. Cuckoo clocks are typically pendulum-driven timepieces that strike the hours using small bells and pipes. The sound made by these clocks imitates the call of the cuckoo bird in combination with a wire gong sound. These clocks have been around since the middle of the 18th century, and have remained almost unchanged until the present.

Cuckoo clock designs are mostly made in the traditional style. They are hanged on a wall and have their wooden cases decorated with carved leaves and animals. Most have a bird that appears through a small trap door while the clock is striking the hour. The bird is often made to move while the hour is being heralded, typically by means of a mechanical arm that lifts the back of the carving.
