Candles are being burned for many reasons. In the house, candles are being burned to create ambiance or to produce a pleasant smell around the house. In the garden, it is protection against bugs and mosquitoes. In spas, candles infused with aromatic essences are burned and they have a calming effect on people having their massages.

Votive candles on the other hand are more commonly used for religious purposes. For this reason, it is also called prayer candle. A votive candle will refer to any candle that is about 2 inches tall and 1.5 inches in diameter. While it used to be white or yellow in color, now it comes in any color and with scent as well. All forms of candles do present a fire hazard, however, so they need to be handled with care.
